The colour of Meranti heartwood varies sharply from dark red to light red-brown and from pale pink to pink-red. Given the diversity of tree types and their region of origin, for the Shorea red meranti species there will always be differences in shades and weights in a delivery of timber. The pink grey sapwood is 20-50 mm thick and distinct from the heartwood.
For Red Meranti, a Dutch standard appeared in 1989 in the series Quality Requirements for Timber (KVH 1980; NEN 5483 'Houtsoort rode Meranti’)
Red Meranti is included in the list of approved timber species for application in wooden façade elements (SKH-Publication 99-05). This means that frames with a KOMO® product certificate can be manufactured with Red Meranti
Red Meranti is listed in BRL 1701 ‘Glued load bearing wooden building constructions’.
Red Meranti meets the requirements as specified in BRL 2902 ‘Laminated timber for non-load bearing applications’

Red Meranti quality class A/B NEN 5483 is classed in Strength Class C20 (NEN-EN 338)

Inside and outside joinery, door and window frames, panelling, pegs, staircases, stair treads, coachbuilding and veneer for plywood
Durability
Resistance to fungi: class 2-4 (durable – poorly durable) for Red Meranti with a density of (600)-680-(730) kg/m³ at 12% moisture content , class 3-4 (moderately durable – poorly durable) for Red Meranti with a density of (490)-520-(550) kg/m³ at 12% moisture content.
Resistance to insects: Termites class M (moderately durable)
